Suicide Prevention Day – Sep 10, 2025

In an effort to “Change the Narrative on Suicide, “The Department of Psychiatry & Community Medicine at the Government Medical College & Hospital (GMC), Omandurar Govt Estate, successfully observed World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, 2025.

The event brought together students, faculty, and mental health professionals to raise awareness on suicide prevention. The Programme started with Tamil Thai Vazhthu, and Welcome Address, and a short introduction by Dr. Malar Moses, MD, HOD of Psychiatry.

The event was presided over by the Dean, Dr. G. Hariharan, MS, DNB, MCh, FRCS. Dr. Jagadeesan, MD, Professor from the Institute of Mental Health, was the special speaker who enlightened on the importance of opening up and ways to identify depression and prevent suicide. Dr. Arun Murugan, Professor and HOD, Community Medicine, GMC OGE, highlighted the importance of primary prevention and public health impact.

The day’s events were held in the presence of other esteemed faculty members, including Dr. G. Thiruvengada Senthil Kumar, Medical Superintendent. Resident Medical Officer, Dr P Saravanan, and Heads of all Departments. The event was also graced by Professors, Assistant Professors, and students of GMC, OGE.

A variety of competitions, including poster making, reels, and short film making, were held to encourage creative and impactful messaging on the topic. The winners of these competitions were honoured. A pledge was also observed on the prevention of suicide
